The Windsor Lancers football team began competing in the Central Canada Intercollegiate Football Conference in 1968, and have continued play uninterrupted since then. The team plays out of University of Windsor Stadium located on the campus grounds at the University of Windsor. The program is notable for featuring three Hec Crighton Trophy winners, most recently being current Hamilton Tiger-Cats player, Daryl Stephenson, when he won the award in 2006. While the teams have had success at an individual level, the team has struggled to establish dominance in the Ontario University Athletics conference, winning the fewest number of Yates Cup trophies, with just one in 1975.

In 2006, the team finished with a winning record for the first time since 1990, posting a 6-2 win-loss total and a fourth place finish, meaning that they would also host their first playoff game since 1990 as well. The Lancers lost that game to the Western Ontario Mustangs and failed to maintain a winning pedigree, enduring four straight losing seasons since that season. The program's fortunes would turn around in 2011 under interim head coach Joe D'Amore as the team finished in fifth place with a 5-3 record. The team won their first playoff game since 2003 over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, but lost once again to the Mustangs in the semi-finals.
