James Frederic Root (August 17, 1931 – May 26, 2003) was a professional American football quarterback in the National Football League. He played two seasons for the Chicago Cardinals (1953, 1956).

Root then coached college football at the University of New Hampshire and the College of William & Mary, compiling a 57–62–2 record in 12 seasons.
