The Fort Wayne FireHawks are an indoor football team affiliated with the Continental Indoor Football League. Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the FireHawks play their home games at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

The FireHawks are the fourth attempt at indoor football in Fort Wayne after the original Fort Wayne Freedom (NIFL & UIF, 2003-06), Fort Wayne Fusion (af2, 2007), and the second Fort Wayne Freedom (CIFL, 2008-09).

2010 SeasonEdit

The Firehawks finished 6-4 during the 2010 Continental Indoor Football League season, earning a third-seed in the playoffs. The FireHawks suffered a loss in their first game as a franchise April 2, 2010, a 55-27 loss to the Cincinnati Commandos. The Fort Wayne FireHawks earned their first victory April 10, 2010, 44-28 against the Miami Valley Silverbacks. The team started the season with Katie Hnida as the team's placekicker. Hnida, known for becoming the first woman to score a point in an NCAA football game. Throughout the season the team experienced many ups and downs, as evident by becoming the first CIFL team to ever to be shutout and post a shutout in the same season. The Marion Mayhem folded during the season, before they played the FireHawks, thus crediting the FireHawks with 2 forfeit wins. Because Mayhem didn't finish the season, several of Marion's players were signed by Fort Wayne in the subsequent weeks to join in the FireHawk's playoff run.[1] In the first playoff game in team history, the FireHawks lost to the second-place, Wisconsin Wolfpack, 25-24.

The team reportedly drew about 2,000 fans per game, according to CIFL stats.

2011 SeasonEdit

In December 2010, owner J. Michael Loomis issued a statement saying that the team would not play in 2011, stopping short of suspending operations. Loomis did say he would try to regroup for 2012. According to published reports, Loomis failed to find investors or financial resources to keep the team active in 2011.[2] There is a chance the FireHawks comeback in 2012 as part of the Indoor Football League. The league is the 2nd largest indoor football league, and would help the team sustain itself for a long time
